Kevin E. Cahill and his frequent co-author, Joseph F. Quinn, published an article in Public Policy & Aging Report titled, “The Importance of Gradual Retirement in America Today.” Drs. Cahill and Quinn describe how gradual retirement has been a persistent feature of older Americans’ work decisions for decades. The authors then present the latest evidence from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and show that, among career employees, gradual retirements—consisting of bridge employment, phased retirement, and reentry—continue to be more common than one-time permanent exits from the labor force.
