The Burien Economic Development Action Plan Update focuses on guiding Burien, Washington, through evolving economic challenges and opportunities over the next decade. As the city emerges from the impacts of COVID-19, it faces shifts in work models, tourism trends, and rising costs that affect both residents and businesses. The plan highlights Burien’s strategic location near Seattle, access to employment centers, and community assets, like St. Anne Hospital and its vibrant small business and cultural scene.
Challenges such as access to employment, transportation costs, income disparity, and displacement risk underscore the importance of an intentional economic approach. Key actions include fostering small business resilience, supporting commercial corridors, and leveraging infrastructure improvements, like the State Route 509 expansion and RapidRide H Line, to enhance regional connectivity. The plan builds on Burien’s 2014 Economic Development Action Plan, integrating new strategies for equitable growth, placemaking, and regional collaboration to create a thriving, inclusive local economy that celebrates Burien’s diverse community.
The final plan was adopted on June 3, 2024.
