Unpacking Downtown Portland’s Decline

Willamette Week just published an article, citing ECONorthwest’s research, that explores the distressing decline of Downtown Portland. The drops in central Portland’s real estate market, hotel occupancy rates, and population can largely be attributed to the city’s inability to recover from the adversities it faced in 2020—from the protests and riots to the detrimental effects of the pandemic. It’s a tough pill to swallow, particularly when comparable metro areas within the Northwest and across the country have been able to recover. Meanwhile, many Portland residents are leaving their once-beloved city to relocate to suburbs or other regions.
