ECONorthwest recently completed an Economic Competitiveness Study for Washington State, and Partner/Senior Economist Mike Wilkerson presented findings to the House Finance Committee last week. The goal of the study was to define economic success in the post-COVID era, and it covered broader-context questions around creating equitable jobs, supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses, decreasing regulatory barriers, and considering the implications of changes to tax policy. The Finance Committee was surprised to find few concrete taxation recommendations in our report; however, Mike and Project Manager Kryn Sausedo reminded the committee that pure cost is not the only measure of economic success, and that opportunity, ease of starting or running a business, and support are also integral to the State’s competitiveness.
