Mark Buckley was quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle about his recent report on the value of restoring Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National Park. Dr. Buckley’s report found that the value of restoring the Hetch Hetchy Valley could reach $178 million annually, based in part on the economic value of outdoor recreation opportunities provided by a restored Hetch Hetchy Valley. The report sheds light on a critical tradeoff between: 1) the value of Hetch Hetchy as a water storage facility, and 2) the value of Hetch Hetchy Valley in a natural condition. Beyond recreational use impacts, Dr. Buckley states, “Returning [Hetch Hetchy] to a more natural state could have all kinds of benefits that we can’t anticipate.”
